When Jay Pivec became the head basketball coach at MCTC in 1990 the men’s program was coming off a 0-22 season and was in jeopardy of being discontinued entirely. “The program had become apathetic,” Pivec said. “We had great interest in the community but no idea what we could become.
Two letters were sent to students their first week back at school: One from the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD), the other from MCTC Public Safety Director Kurt Schmidt. Profiled was Devlin Eugene Wubbena, MCTC student as of Fall 2007 and registered level-three sex offender denoting him as most likely to re-offend.
All students attending college at MCTC will pay the same tuition rate, effective fall semester 2007, no matter which state they call home. During Minnesota’s latest 2007 legislative session, a bill was passed effectively ending MCTC’s need for reciprocity.

Al Franken, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. senate, will be speaking to MCTC students Monday October 8th as part of his “college week” tour through 11 Minnesota universities. From 11:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. Mr. Franken will meet with 80 to 100 students in room L-3000 to discuss issues concerning college students in Minnesota.
Students Donate a Pint of Life
The Memorial Blood Centers bus arrived at MCTC Tuesday, September 25th, collecting blood from students and faculty to give back to the community.

During the middle of rush hour, a tragedy struck the Twin Cities that most people would have considered unthinkable, on the evening of Aug. 1, 2007. The 35W Bridge, which was completed in 1956, and was under heavy maintenance, collapsed into the Mississippi River, an event so extraordinary that it would be hard to imagine a more efficient recovery and rescue effort.
Critical Mass, a monthly community bike ride, exploded into a cluster of cyclists and police officers and ended in 19 arrests for riot and disorderly conduct Aug. 31 – charges some witnesses question. The Minneapolis Police Department’s Public Data reports, “a detail of officers was assigned to monitor the CRITICAL MASS,” following the “extremely large group of bicyclists.
