MCTC’s Prized Asset

This past month, MCTC president Phil Davis delivered an address on the state’s staggering budget deficit, and the effects that deficit will have at MCTC. The announced reductions were devastating. “The significant loss in state funds will produce a fundamental shift in the range of programs and services,” Davis said.

Awards Keep Piling Up For Men’s Basketball

The Minneapolis Community and Technical College men’s basketball program received two honors in March: star sophomore Cortez Wallace was named a First Team All-American and head coach Jay Pivec was named NJCAA Division III Coach of the Year. Wallace, a 6’6″ forward from Minneapolis, started all but two games this season for the Mavericks.

Digital Textbooks?

Hi there, I know you cover education, and so I thought now-as colleges and universities are set to begin their spring semesters imminently-would be a critical time both economically and environmentally to encourage the nation’s educators and students to explore the significantly cheaper, significantly greener digital textbook alternative.

Nursing Students

You should cover the story of how my wife is having her application for the nursing program denied. The nursing department is denying her application on the grounds that her reading placement test has expired. My wife entered MCTC in 2007, so she is covered under the student catalog for 2006-07 (http://www.

And That’s The Rest of The Story

It was fantastic that student reporter Athena Schmidlin in this week’s City College News covered Shannon Gibney and my discussion of white privilege in a February Time to Talk session. Any opportunity to broaden awareness and deepen discussion essential to MCTC’s healthy functioning is a good thing.

Women’s History Month

Around the world women are mistreated by men, and remembering women’s history month can be very devastating. According to Mrs. Carol Hogard, a professor in the Women’s Studies field at MCTC, “We need women history month because the contributions of women to the liberation of countries has usually been ignored.

Pivec to coach All-Star game

MCTC coach Jay Pivec, who was named NJCAA Division III men’s basketball Coach of the Year last week, received another national honor this week when he was selected to coach the Division III men’s basketball All-Star team in a game against the Division II All-Stars this Saturday in Odessa, Texas.

Alice in Wonderland Preview

Alice in Wonderland is a unique piece of wonderment in which a spirited, young girl embarks on an adventure and encounters a series of high-fantastical characters like none other who turn her and her audience around and around. While seemingly written for children – and children have universally been captivated by Alice’s mind-bending escapades – the tale truly requires an adult sensibility to appreciate its many levels of ambiguity, perverse logic and, perhaps above all, its stunning insights into the far reaches of power.

Powershift 2009

Powershift 2009 was a meeting of the minds. Students and educators from all over the country, including from MCTC came together in Washington D.C. to learn their role in addressing environmental concerns, the chief among them the climate change crisis. It was an incredible opportunity to see people from so many diverse backgrounds to come together, to learn from one another and show that they cared about their collective future.

MCTC Budget 101

In the last edition of College City News, student Shaka Farr wanted to see information on where our tuition costs go, and how the budget is spent. I attended the FY 2010 Budget Process’s Budget 101 Meeting to better understand the school’s financial situation.
