Ummah Project celebrates Ramadan, plans for future youth and recreation center
Students, faculty and the Muslim Student Association (MSA) from MCTC participated in an Iftaar dinner hosted by the Ummah Project at Coffman Memorial Union on the University of Minnesota campus last Friday.
The Ummah Project, which tasks itself with the planning of a multi-million dollar Muslim youth and recreation center here in Minneapolis, said it is committed to “empowering Muslim youth and their families by providing gender specific health, social, educational and leadership programs and resources to build safe and sustainable Muslim communities.”
MCTC student and leader in MSA Saciido Shaie and philosophy faculty member Matthew Palombo were among those who spoke at the dinner, in addition to Muslim leaders who presented via satellite.
The progress that the Ummah Project is making toward the recreation center stands in stark contrast to the embroiled and vitriolic debate that surrounds another Muslim community center planned to be built near where the World Trade Center towers once stood.
