With the cold weather rolling in, opportunity for outdoor exercise is disappearing, but MCTC’s Fitness Center is free of charge to all students.

Fitness activities on campus are free to all students, all they need to do is bring their student ID to the weight room or gym in Bowman Hall and fill out a waiver form to enroll. The open weight room hours are 12:15 through 4 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Fridays. The weight room has treadmills, ellipticals, free weights and weight machines.

Organized intramurals are also held throughout the semester which students can register for online. Free yoga classes are held every Wednesday from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. in the Bowman Hall dance room. Personal trainers are also available free of charge and there are lockers and showers available. Attendees are asked to bring their own locks as well as appropriate fitness attire.

“We want to create a fitness culture where you have to wear workout clothes instead of wearing jeans or cargo pants,” said Campus Recreation and Wellness Coordinator Drew Rongere.

In addition to personal fitness, a benefit to the MCTC fitness center is the reward system of the Fitness Challenge.

“Every time they come in, they get a point for each workout to be a part of the fitness challenge,” said Rongere. “Once they get to 20 points they get a campus recreational towel, 40 points they get a water bottle, 60 points they get a fitness challenge t-shirt, 80 points they get a sack-pack.”

The month of Sept. averaged 49 attendees per day in the fitness center. Students, staff and faculty can all utilize the fitness services, but faculty and staff must purchase a voucher or a semester pass. To get started as a student, they just need to stop by with their ID to enroll and with the help of the fitness center workers, they can create a program to reach their fitness goals.

MCTC personal trainer Tysean Wallace said, “The only person that can keep you from getting in shape is yourself.”
