Key figure losses lead to Learning Center tutor shortage

A tutor shortage has struck MCTC this semester, leaving the Learning Center struggling to replace key positions within the tutor department.

Dr. Louis Porter, interim director of the Learning Center, (Porter was appointed to the position after the passing of John Henriechs earlier this year) said the Learning Center is in need of student tutors for the math, writing and science departments

Compounding the loss of Henriechs is the departure of Joy Lumbly, who was a professional tutor for writing, and a lack of a professional tutor for math.

There are currently 50 tutors in the Learning Center, a number that needs to increase by six to seven tutors for each department said Porter.

In order to fulfill that goal Porter said the Learning Center is taking a multi-pronged approach that comprises of raising awareness to faculty members to encourage students to become tutors, a marketing campaign that includes posting fliers around campus, tabling at MCTC, announcements on the closed circuit Televisions around campus and word-of-mouth.

The search for professional tutors is advancing according to Porter, who said that the job postings have closed.

“We’re in the process of pulling together search committees so we can get those interviews done,” Porter said.

The lack of tutors is also affecting the tutors themselves according to Kate Pitt, a tutor at MCTC.

“Tutor shortages are exacerbated by stressed, sick tutors taking time away from work to concentrate on their own studies (understandable), as well as students seeking help not being introduced to new tutors who are being hired – sometimes you get a few people [with] lots of appointments, while others have whole days free,” Pitt said.

Porter has set a timeline of early next semester for the Learning Center to be at full capacity for professional and student tutors.

The Learning Center can be reached in the T Building in room T.4300 or call by 612-659-6140.
