A select number of students took the right step forward, braving sub zero temperatures on their day-off Thursday, February 27, for Student Success Day at MCTC. After a first tease of spring, Student Success Day offered an opportunity of re-motivation for students beaten by the brutal winter this semester.

Faculty members also took a break from their conventional routines to host the various workshops throughout the day. Those not interested in workshops could join student and faculty dialogues related to succeeding in school and the community.

Biology professor Cathy Geist participated as a member of the Faculty Sustainability Board in round-circle discussions with students in the “Climate Disruption and You” workshop. Geist prefers to take on the mentor role, wanting students to feel empowered and to practice what she teaches even in her own everyday life.

“From what I’ve heard from students, yes they learn a lot from Student Success Day,” said Geist. “Connecting with other students influences more campus awareness.”

Students who understand their resources at MCTC can better prepare for the future, the main focus of the Keynote Presentation. New technology is being made available for students striving for their academic goal and finding jobs after graduation. Programs and internships are also at the disposal of students.

Urban Scholars is a program for community college students in Minneapolis that provides insight on government jobs and opportunities in the field. Accepted students receive scholarship funds and leadership experience along with the networking opportunities of the program.

Student Success Day continues to up the ante every semester, giving new reasoning on why you should participate.
