Burton hits free throws to lift Mavs over Northland

MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 5, 2009) – Freshman point guard Freddie Burton hit clutch free throws to lift the Minneapolis Community and Technical College over the Northland Pioneers in men’s basketball team this afternoon at Bowman Hall.

The Mavericks improved to 6-1 while the Pioneers fell to 5-2.

Burton (Minneapolis, Minn.), scored seven points, including one three-pointer and four from the line, but had three defensive boards, four assists and a steal in nearly 30 minutes.

Peter Olafeso (So., St. Paul, Minn.) led MCTC with 14 points with DeShawn Thurmond (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and Kenny Olafeso (So., St. Paul, Minn.) had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Pioneers were led by Terrell Lipkins (Fr., Canon, Ohio) and Richardo Wells (So., Cleveland, Ohio), who had 18 and 14 points, respectively.

The defense for both teams played a big role in the game with the Mavs having 43 defense stops to the Pioneers’ 39.
As a team, the Mavericks had 10 steals (led by K. Olafeso with three) and five blocked shots, with Ronald Kelly, Jr. (So., St. Paul, Minn.) stopping three.
The Mavs also cashed in with 21 points off of Northland turnovers.

Rounding out the scoring for MCTC were Dan Kotz (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and Kelly Jr. with 8 points each and Jamar Franks (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and Burton with seven apiece.

The Maverick men return to action for a weekend in northern Minnesota, playing Rainey River on Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. and Hibbing on Dec. 12 at 3 p.m.
