Burton hits 17 to lead Mavericks past Minn. West

MINNEAPOLIS (Jan. 27, 2010) – Freddie Burton (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) led all scores with scorers with 17 points as Minneapolis Community and Technical College defeated Minnesota West Community and Technical College 68-44 tonight in men’s basketball action in Bowman Hall.

The Mavericks (17-4, 6-0) – the eighth-ranked team in NJCAA Division III – were paced by Burton’s effort off the bench and 15 points from Kenny Olafeso (So., St. Paul, Minn.).

The Blue Jays (3-14, 0-6) were led by Cory Lesnar (So., Milbank, S.D.) with 12 points.
Rounding out the point scorers for MCTC were a quartet of players with six points: Omar Omar (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.), Michael Welsh (So., Minneapolis, Minn.), Ronald Kelly, Jr. (So., St. Paul, Minn.) and Dan Konz (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.). DeShawn Thurmond (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and Josh Spriggs (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) had four points. Two other players had two points.
The Mavericks also claimed 47 rebounds with Olafeso and Kelly, Jr. chipping in eight and six, respectively.

MCTC was without Peter Olafeso, who did not suit up tonight. Through 20 games this season, Olafeso has averaged 17.55 points per game.

The Mavericks have a three game road trip, traveling to Fergus Falls to face the Spartans on Jan. 30 at 3 p.m. On Feb. 3 and 6, they travel to Rochester and Ridgewater, with games at 8 p.m. and 3 p.m.
They return home on Feb. 10, the final regular home game for MCTC.
