MINNEAPOLIS (Feb. 26, 2010) — Peter Olafeso (So., St. Paul, Minn.) led all scores with 29 points and ten rebounds as MCTC defeated Vermilion Community College 88-67 in MCAC men’s basketball tournament action tonight in Bowman Hall. The game was the fourth and last quarterfinal game of the day.
Minneapolis (23-5, 11-1) — the fifth-ranked team nationally — lead nearly the entire game and opened a 24 point lead late in the second half. Vermilion (19-9, 9-5) was the inference’s leading scorers, but failed to get to their 80 point per game average tonight.
Olafeso’s brother Kenny scored 22 points and collected ten rebounds. Ronald Kelly, Jr. (So., St. Paul, Minn.) had ten points and 14 rebounds, while Freddie Burton (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and Michael Welsh (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) each had seven points.
For the Ironmen, Anthony Bryant (So., St. Paul, Minn.) scored 26 points and the nations fifth-leading scorer Venzal Russell (So., Detroit, Mich.) had 13 points.
MCTC plays in the second semifinal of the day, facing off with eighth-ranked Central Lakes — a 100-75 winner today — at 3:00 p.m. Rochester faces Northland in the other semifinal at 1:00 p.m.
